A JRO Fanmix
Find it here:
The Fanmix!
Notes: Not every single song is a JRO song. There's a small bit of other pairings and I think a solo song or two. There's also not the greatest variety in terms of Artists. This is mainly because these songs are all ones that I've used for LJ-cuts. I wasn't really planning on making a fanmix of said songs, so I wasn't worried about changing up the artists.
1. At the Beginning, Richard Marx & Donna Lewis
2. Rain King, Counting Crows
3. Hand Me Down, Matchbox Twenty
4. 9 Crimes, Damien Rice
5. Keep it Simple, Cobra Starship
6. Vicious Traditions, the Veils
7. Samson, Regina Spektor
8. Up All Night (Frankie Miller Goes to Hollywood), Counting Crows
9. Have You Seen Me Lately?, Counting Crows
10. Found a Way, Drake Bell
11. West of her Spine, Bell X1
12. Hazy, Counting Crows
13. Recovering the Satellites, Counting Crows
BONUS:
14. Summer Skin, Death Cab for Cutie
SONG PREVIEWS AND DESCRIPTIONS:
At the Beginning, Richard Marx & Donna Lewis
(Johnny, Ripp, Ophelia)
I'll be there when the world stops turning
I'll be there when the storm is through
In the end I wanna be standing
At the beginning with you
-- There is some semblance of continuity in this fanmix. At the Beginning is just a great starter song for the three of them. They're at the very start of some larger adventure, but most importantly is that they are together right from the start. They're already entwined from the moment Johnny unites them together for the first time.
Rain King, Counting Crows
(Ripp)
Mama, why am I so alone?
I can't go outside
I'm scared I might not make it home
I'm alive but I'm sinking in
If there's anyone at home at your place
Why don't you invite me in?
-- There are so many things in this that are just so Ripp, especially teen Ripp. Johnny and Phi are just beginning to date and Ripp is still alone in a lot of different ways. And the 'why don't you invite me in' line makes me smile, because I can just imagine itty bitty Ripp poking his head into Johnny's house.
Hand Me Down, Matchbox Twenty
(Ophelia, Ripp)
From what I’ve seen
You’re just a one more hand me down
Cause no one's tried to give you what you need
So lay all your troubles down
I am with you now
-- Ophelia is dating Johnny, but it's Ripp who becomes the person she goes to when she's scared. Ripp allows Ophelia to dump all her fears, all her secrets onto him and he holds her up. Because he LOVES her.
9 Crimes, Damien Rice
(Ophelia, Johnny, Jayne)
Leave me out with the waste
This is not what I do
It's the wrong kind of place
To be cheating on you
It's the wrong time
She's pulling me through
It's a small crime
And I've got no excuse
-- Those last two lines just seem to fit the Johnny/Jayne relationship. Johnny isn't quite cheating, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't realize that there is something wrong with what he's doing.
Keep it Simple, Cobra Starship
(Ripp, Ladies)
I'm down if you don't expect any more from me
I ain't got much for you
It's all right
If you wanna get down
Keep it simple, now
-- RippxtheLadies is everyone's OTP. Just something fun that basically sums up a lot of what Ripp is.
Vicious Traditions, the Veils
(Buzz, Ripp, Tank, Buck)
He'd change his name if it made any difference
Now he's waiting in line for the lasting confession
But on his grave's written here lies our son Joseph
His country's gun and innocent soldier
-- Mostly I love the repetition of 'Fight your way out of this one'. The title itself also gets to me. Honestly, I can't put into words WHY this reminds me of the Grunt boys only that it does.
Samson, Regina Spektor
(Ripp, Jill)
You are my sweetest downfall
I loved you first, I loved you first
Beneath the sheets of paper lies my truth
I have to go, I have to go
Your hair was long when we first met
-- The idea is just that Jill IS the first one to love Ripp. Who knows if they'll ever end up like this. It's possible. There's something heartbreaking about the idea of Jill and Ripp together though. It implies that terrible things have happened either to their significant others or between them. I also don't think Jill would ever be enough for Ripp. She is no Ophelia. She is no Johnny. And he is no Buck and even though she once loved him strong enough to wake the dead, it's nothing but a dull ache now.
Up All Night (Frankie Miller Goes to Hollywood), Counting Crows
(Johnny, Ripp, Ophelia)
Fix your hair just right
Put your jeans on tight,
Wear a dress, so I can get it off real easy.
'Cause I've been thinking I'd
Like to see your eyes
Open up real wide the minute that you see me.
-- Day-to-day life for the trio. The first three lines in my little snippet of the song remind me of each one of the trio. Johnny's hair and Ripp's sexy jeans and the boys thinking naughty thoughts about dear Phi.
Have You Seen Me Lately, Counting Crows
(Johnny, Ripp, Ophelia)
You got a piece of me
But it’s just a little piece of me
And I don’t need anyone
And these days I feel like I’m fading away
Like sometimes when I hear myself on the radio
-- This is the song I listened to nonstop when I drew the first real trio picture. There's just something in the tune and the words that reminds me of their falling together. It just seems to suit Ripp's disconnection from Johnny and Phi on that night. It's a little like he's lost himself and he's remembering the teeniest things as he goes stumbling into the house, drunk as hell.
Found a Way, Drake Bell
(Johnny)
No one cares
What you give
You know you gotta live like you wanna live
When it's time
To be free
You know you gotta be what you wanna be
-- LOL, Drake Bell. Anyway, Johnny finally makes some sort of decision. He is keeping his Phi and he is keeping his Ripp and he is going to be happy. He wants a home just as much as they do.
West of Her Spine, Bell X1
(Ripp, Ophelia)
It's here I'll rest my chin
And breathe her deep and smile
For I think I've found a soft spot
And I'll lie here a while
-- Ripp/Ophelia is basically the cutest, most romantic pairing ever.
Hazy, Counting Crows
(Johnny, Ripp)
When you disappear on me it's just like
Parades in the rain
Every time I see you - you just disappear again
Every time you're leaving I don't know what to say
I wanna see this whole town go away
-- For some reason this is more Johnny/Ripp to me than a song for the three of them. I think that if Johnny does leave (and who knows if he will?) it would hit Ripp hardest. Phi relies on both of them to keep her sane. Ripp seems to need Phi to keep safe and Johnny to keep him safe. Phi would be devastated, but Ripp would be... empty.
Recovering the Satellites, Counting Crows
(Johnny, Ripp, Ophelia)
So why’d you come home to this faithless town
Where we make a lifetime commitment
To recovering the satellites
And all anybody really wants to know is...
When are you gonna come down
-- Strangetown anthem. When is Johnny coming down and Phi is the one with heaven in her eyes and Ripp is so fucked up and it's all them. The three of them combined into one song. Live version, because it's even better than the original!
BONUS:
Summer Skin, Death Cab for Cutie
(Don Lothario, Nina Caliente)
On the night you left I came over
And we peeled the freckles from our shoulders
Our brand new coats so flushed and pink
And I knew your heart I couldn't win
Cause the seasons change was a conduit
And we left our love in our summer skin
-- Nina and Don overlay each other. They've known one another since their almost baby-days. And they experienced a lot of awkward firsts with each other as well. I think that they love one another, except that it probably will never quite be enough to ground either of them.
a/n: Okay, definitely lamest thing I've done thus far (I SAY THAT SO MUCH THAT I THINK ITS LOST ITS EFFECT D: ). Honestly, I just wanted to see if I could make a fanmix. I've never done one before and it's taken me forever to figure out how to combine all the songs into one neat little zip file. Though, it's actually REALLY easy to do and I'm kind of a doofus for not figuring it out sooner.
I didn't put every single song I've used as an LJ-cut in here. I cut it down to some of my favorites. Surprisingly the ones I kept all seemed to fit some aspect of the JRO situation.
