He thinks about the worst.
Love.
Love was the worst. Sakura-sized love that consumed his whole being and tried to squeeze him into caring. Naruto-sized love that pounded him over the head and made him feel smaller than he used to. Kakashi-sized love that taught him about precious things and protecting instead of avenging.
And the Itachi-sized love that lingered without his consent that mocked his entire clan by just existing and broke every other love it touched.
He thinks about the worst.
Hate.
Hate was the worst. Sakura-sized hate that reached all the way to her green eyes and told him that trying to kill Naruto was the worst mistake he’d ever made. Naruto-sized hate that still pounded him over the head and yelled at him ‘til there was nothing left. Kakashi-sized hate that was more dissapointment and a feeling of failure.
Itachi-sized hate which was so huge that it could power a nation. A hate so encompassing that Sasuke knew that all other hates could never even dream of amounting to this one. A hate that helped him realize that all the sakuranarutokakashi-sized hates weren’t real. They didn’t/couldn’t/wouldn’t hate him.
No matter how much he wanted them to.
Because the worst.
The real worst.
Came a few years later.
When he finally came home.
When Itachi was finally dead and Orochimaru was just a bad memory.
He came back.
But they didn’t love him.
But they didn’t hate him.
They simply did not care.
Apathy.
Apathy was the real worst. Sakura-sized apathy that no longer added a suffix and wore her hair longer and agreed with Naruto. Naruto-sized apathy that was a smile and a nod and then went roaming off to spar with someone else - someone like Neji or Rock Lee or anyone not-Sasuke. Kakashi-sized apathy because there was a new squad and they were nothing like SasukeNarutoSakuraOrochimaruJiraiyaTsunadeKakashiObitoRin and that was fine by him.
Itachi-sized apathy because dead men can’t feel.
When Sasuke came home was the worst.
Because it wasn’t home anymore.
(and sasuke had always been alone but only now did he understand what it meant to be truly lonely)
