Title: Rocks
Fandom/Universe: Avatar
Character(s): Katara
Rating: Teen
There are times (small, fleeting...but there just the same) that she wants to stop walking and say ‘enough.’
She wants to pull him into her and wrap her arms around him and say ‘No more, Aang. We’re done. Let’s stop this stupidness. We’re kids. Dammit, Aang. We’re. Just. Kids.’ Even more than that she wants him to understand that he is part of the we and is therefore allowed to go with them and they can put all this saving the world nonsense behind them.
Sokka would never allow it. He’d list all the million and one reasons why they have to do this and she knows them all by heart, because she whispers them to herself every night, but for once she wished that he would put those reasons aside and agree with her.
And Toph. Toph wouldn’t care as long as they continued adventuring. She wasn’t helping out of moral obligation, but rather selfish wants. It annoyed Katara some days, but on others (when the need to stop grew too strong) it was a comfort to know that she wouldn’t upset the smaller girl.
Aang.
She doesn’t know what he would do.
On the one hand, the boy would do practically anything for her. On the other, he knew his responsibilities and he knew about all the people relying on him and he knew about her father fighting in the war (a war zone is no place for children, she thinks - knows) and even though he’d do anything for her she didn’t think he could do this.
She doesn’t know what he’d do, but she can guess.
That’s why she never does it. She never tells them its stupid, never stops smiling, never cries if she can help it, because they need a rock and even though Sokka’s head is filled with them he’s too easily cracked and even though Toph is made of them she’s too full of herself to really help and even though Aang was trapped inside of one for a hundred years he’s still a shoddy earth bender.
So she has to be their rock.
(even though she’s water all the way through and water isn’t strong or durable. even though water can turn to ice and be easily shattered into a million pieces. even though she wants to stop more than all of the others combined.)
So she puts on a brilliant smile.
And she keeps walking.
a/n: Despite the title, it's not about Toph. Also I love Katara. 'Specially in the last episode where she had to keep everyone from falling apart. Such great character development for her.
