Our story opens at PS 118, an elementary school nestled comfortably in the city of Hillwood. Also - look how pretty the colors are on those buildings in the background. One of my favorite things about HA! is just the scenery - it’s gorgeous.
Valentine’s Day is fast approaching (doi) and the school is getting ready for it. Look at the decorations!
Sixth Grader Ruth McDougal passes Arnold in the hall - catching his attention. She doesn’t seem to notice.
Lol, he even peeks his head back out the door to get another look at her. And his smile gets all goofy.
Inside the classroom, it seems as though Arnold has an admirer of his own. Also - their expressions are all matching and adorable! They are both so lovestruck and goofy.
Aww, look at her smooshed up little face!
Anyway, the kids have to make Valentine’s for someone that they care about.
I wonder who Arnold will make a Valentine for?
I just love this exchange:
Peapod Kid: “Miss Slovak, what if we don’t really care about anyone? What if we have never experienced love?”
Slovak: “Then you’d be me. :| ”
The kids set to work making their Valentine’s. (HAI PHOEBE, STINKY AND NADINE ILU!!)
Helga makes various attempts at a Valentine for Arnold.
They don’t work out.
(I LOVE this cap. This is basically me in class.)
“Dear Ruth,
I have long admired you from a far and now I’d like to admire you from up close. Please meet me at the Chez Pierre for an early supper.
Signed,
Anonymous”
Gerald’s face speaks for us all. How the heck is Ruth gonna know who ‘Anonymous’ is? Arnold believes (bless his little heart) that she’ll just know. Poor, deluded kid.
Helga is not impressed. Stupid sixth graders….
Miss Slovak then goes on to hand out letters from everyone’s penpals. Helga whines about never getting fancy presents from her penpal like Rhonda gets. Slovak tells her that sometimes the most beautiful gift can come in the plainest box.
Is it wrong that I still laugh my ass off at this?
Just as Slovak is about to hand Arnold a letter from his penpal - Cecile - the bell rings. Recess!
Helga is jealous. Of Cecile. Of Ruth. Of any girl that gets within three feet of Arnold.
Arnold manages to slip his Valentine into Ruth’s already bulky pile. Ruth seems to like it, though does she really know who it’s from?
Meanwhile, Helga is still miserable and jealous. Amidst the anger, a small idea begins to form in the back of her mind.
Helga sneaks back into the classroom and adds a little extra to Arnold’s letter. Seems that ‘Cecile’ is coming to visit Arnold all the way from France and has something very important to say to him. You are so ~sneaky~ Helga!
‘Cecile’ sets the date for that night at Chez Paris . Have you noticed something going on with those restaurants yet?
Oh no! ‘Cecile’ is coming to visit on the same night that Arnold is supposed to go on his date with Ruth! D:
Arnold: “Gerald, what am I going to do?”
Gerald: Oh yeah right, Arnold. Like you really need MY help. Most guys gotta wait ‘til the seventh grade to have this kind of girl trouble!”
In a weird stroke of fate, the two restaurants happen to be located right across the street from another!
Now if Ruth decides to actually show up, Arnold can run back and forth from one place to the other. I’m SURE this won’t end badly! Really, this plan seems air tight.
Also, the scenery is pretty!
Helga sets to work at becoming the best French speaker ever.
Really, you guys - she’s AWESOME.
Helga: “Sha-fore a la tour awful silver plate!”
I bet she will be speaking French in no time!
:|
The boys start talking about what the hell Arnold is even going to SAY to Ruth. She’s an older woman after all! She’ll be expecting some sort of depth, right?
Arnold starts spouting some poetry about how damn purty Ruth is and both Gerald and I come seconds away from losing our lunches. I think it was the ‘milky white shoulders’ that took it a step too far. D:
Also, I just love this little bit of animation when Gerald grabs and lifts Arnold when he tells him to get a hold of himself.
Then Gerald’s like: “Okay, so she’s hot. What else do you know about her?”
Arnold has no answer to that. He just wants to tell her that he likes her a lot. I can forgive this, because he’s nine and a dumb boy.
Elsewhere, Helga is getting sexified.
Also, I totally didn’t get this joke when I was a kid. Even all the dog pictures/lady with the poodles didn’t get through to me. I just thought that she took her dogs in with her and I was like: “what a crazy lady :D “
Helga wants to get her hair did. The man at the counter is not sure what to do. He’s conflicted, but Helga is a pushy little brat and she’ll get what she wants goddamnit.
What a crazy lady. :D
(ps the scenery! so fucking pretty omg!)
The boys are still working at that ‘how to talk to older girls’ thing. Arnold starts in on the pretty words again, but it’s less physical this time and also kind of sweet. I like that he just wants her to know that he likes her. Arnold is very open with how he feels about girls.
Gerald gets a little emotional.
Arnold: “Gerald? Are you crying?”
Gerald: “No, no - of course not. I-I just got something in my eye. That’s all.”
Arnold: “What? What’s in your eye?”
Gerald: “It’s nothing - it’s nothing, okay? Just don’t worry about it, okay man?”
I love Gerald’s ‘tough guy’ crying. Apparently I liked it enough that I stuck it in this comic, even though I totally didn’t know it at the time. XD
Hot.
Seriously, this is all the rage in France.
How did I not get this joke? I was a DUMB kid.
Don’t forget to purr!
(sorry, wrong episode. XD)
Wicked little girls, kissed the boys and made them cry
Raisin' double trouble every time we pass them by
Some might say we're wicked little girls
With curves and kissers and pearly whites
You better keep an eye on your boys and lock em up tight
Damn, she’s hot.
Then, in another BIZARRE quirk of fate, the REAL Cecile is ACTUALLY on her way to see Arnold.
RIDICULOUS.
a/n: Hey there, all you awesome kids. I've been in a ~CRAZY~ Hey Arnold mood as of late. I'm not really sure why, but it feels good to get the fangirlish juices pumpin'. Maybe because it's February? Which means Valentine's Day is coming up fast?
I don't remember who said it first, but Helga and Arnold are THE Valentine's Day couple. They have a whole thirty-minute special dedicated to them and how goddamn OTP they are after all!
And so I've decided that such an awesome episode and couple deserves an equally awesome picspam type thing. AMIRITE?
(hint: the answer is yes)
Part Two should be up tomorrow or Monday. I meant to do this earlier, but RL kind of got in the way. Hope you enjoy it!
ETA: You can use any of the caps for icons/graphics/etc. They aren't the best quality, but they're I think they're pretty decent.
