leskuhNo new Scooby this Monday so I might as well do this while the episode is still super fresh!
Fucking fantastic. I'm not going to compare it to Modern Warfare, because goddamnit comparing all the bigger eps like this one to Modern Warfare gets really tiresome. MW isn't even one of my favorite eps anyway. I mean, I would say it is probably the best written/directed/monumental episode of Community, but that doesn't make it my favorite or even that that close to it. Because, for me, Community is all about the character junk. The soapy relationship-y stuff. These bigger, more badass eps only work because the show is so well built on it's characters/relationships. It makes the pay off that much sweeter. The cherry on top.
This episode was just... fun! I kind of want to say it was light, but it really wasn't. Everyone was in actual physical danger. The stakes were raised and it was grand.
Dean Pelton's costume was amazing mostly because I think he has the pizzaz to really work it. And it's fun to contrast it against Ken Jeong's, which was much more unfortunate and unflattering. Seriously Chang. If you're gonna do drag at least do something that isn't in danger of letting your banana slip out. D:
Speaking of bananas - RICH! Okay, fuck. I love him. Like I think he's seriously gorgeous and the most hilarious foil to Jeff and he needs to return if only because HE IS FUCKING INSANE. I love him sort of... complimenting Annie, while still sort of pushing her down as something under him? Like... saying she'd make "quite the little nurse." I can't explain it, but he does it with Jeff too. The things he says and the way he says them don't quite line up and it makes you think he is actually being a douchebag, but you're not sure.
(glad they went with Rich instead of Nurse Jackie. looooove Patton Oswalt, but I think it gave Jeff a more powerful presence in the storyline.)
I called a lot of stuff in the ep. before it happened, which doesn't happen that often with Community, but some stuff just seemed obvious. I immediately called Britta being bit when she got into the study room and took off her claws. And once they left the study room I was like: "98% sure this is going to end up being a Troy/Abed plot which ends with Abed sacrificing himself for Troy."
Annie getting dragged through the broken window was legit freaky. I kind of wish she'd lasted a little longer though. Britta and Rich both thinking they were special was lulzy. I think it's kind of odd - I mean... only sort of because the stakes were fairly high - that only Abed and Annie were really like: "WE'VE GOT TO HELP ALL THESE PEOPLE OR THEY'LL DIE." from the get go.
The only thing I'll say about the Shirley/Chang kiss is that I hate it so much. I hate that they probably did it. I hate that this show has continuity and we might have to come back to that sometime in the future and it BETTER NOT RETURN IN THE FORM OF A PREGNANCY SCARE OR I WILL HULK THE FUCK OUT.
I just... Shirley is my girl. I love her so fucking much and she deserves someone AMAZING. The fact that her first onscreen kiss is with someone who is supposed to be crazy and detestable and gross is just... fjalsfjdlskafjdsaflkasjflaskfjasklhf. SO ANGRY.
However, my anger was very much pacified by a whole episode of shirtless Donald Glover. MORE OF THAT. Joel McHale who? I think you're confused. The only sexy beast on Community that I know of is Donald Fucking Glover.
I knew who Shirley was almost immediately, but she also kept up a Miss Piggy voice for most of the night and they did a good job of making her sort of ambiguous. Her Galinda costume was a kind of garish pink and that big ass curly hair definitely gave off a Piggy vibe. Also, the scene where she falls and then sort of bounces to the bathroom? SHE MOVES EXACTLY LIKE MISS PIGGY and then she does the funniest Piggy voice in the bathroom with Chang.
I would have said Chang was Michelle Kwan too, but that's because I don't know any other figure skaters. I don't really know who Peggy Flemming is or if I'd even heard of her before last night.
